Plant Care
Location:
Every houseplant has a preferred location. The right
place for your plant mainly depends on light,
humidity and water.
Sunny locations: Cacti, gerbera and chrysanthemums, as well as palm species
such as fan palms or plants like pothos, can tolerate stronger
sunlight. Nevertheless, you should avoid direct sunlight,
especially in summer.
Shady locations: Some plants such as ferns, peace lilies,
snake plants, kentia palms or dragon trees also do well with
less light, but need higher humidity. This makes them perfect
for the bathroom.
Avoid placing plants above or directly next to radiators. If
there is no alternative, make sure they get enough water.
Water and Humidity:
Plants need fresh water regularly. How much and how often
depends on the individual plant.
If the plant needs a lot of water, make sure that the
substrate is always moist, but not wet. The finger test can
help here: simply place your finger in the soil. If some soil
sticks to your finger, it is still moist. Alternatively,
you can use a moisture meter.
A plant with moderate water requirements should be watered
when the substrate feels dry during the finger test.
If the plant needs very little water, the substrate can remain
dry for a longer period of time.
Some plants, such as orchids, benefit from an occasional
immersion bath. To do this, remove the plant from the decorative
pot and place it in lukewarm water until no more air bubbles
are visible. Then let it drain and air-dry before placing it
back in the pot.
In general, you should occasionally rinse your plants with
lukewarm water in the shower to remove dust.
To increase humidity, mist the leaves with a little water.
Problems:
Change the location if you notice:
Yellow leaf tips (location too cool)
Poor growth and pale, yellowish leaves (lack of light)
Loss of flower buds (draughts)
Water less if you notice:
Brown spots on leaves or yellow, falling leaves
(waterlogging)
The plant quickly loses leaves (waterlogging)
To avoid waterlogging, you can also add a layer of gravel
at the bottom of the pot.
Special Care Tips for Water Plants, Orchids and Hydrangeas
Water Plants:
Water your Water Plant only occasionally and change the water
completely every 3 weeks
Ideally, use rainwater or mineral water. Make sure
that the leaves
do not touch the water and that it only reaches the base of the roots.
Extra tip: Add one drop of liquid fertilizer when changing the water.
Location: Partial shade and not too warm
Orchids:
Orchids do not like wet feet. It is best to occasionally
immerse the nursery pot in lukewarm water, let it drain well and only then
place it back into the decorative pot.
Location: bright, but without direct midday sun.
Hydrangeas:
Hydrangeas need plenty of water and should never dry out completely.
Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
Location: bright to partially shaded and not too hot.
Frequently Asked Questions About Plant Care
How often should you water houseplants?
How often a houseplant should be watered depends on the type of plant, its location, the season and the room temperature. It is best to check the soil regularly with the finger test: if the top layer of soil feels dry, the plant can usually be watered.
What does waterlogging mean for plants?
Waterlogging occurs when excess water cannot drain away and the roots remain constantly wet. This can lead to root rot. Therefore, water should be removed from decorative pots or saucers after watering.
Which location is ideal for houseplants?
Many houseplants prefer a bright location without direct midday sun. Some plants also tolerate partial shade, while cacti and succulents prefer particularly bright spots. It is important to consider the individual needs of each plant.
How do you care for orchids properly?
Orchids do not like permanently wet roots. Instead of frequent watering, an occasional immersion bath in lukewarm water is recommended. Afterwards, the nursery pot should drain well before it is placed back into the decorative pot. The location should be bright, but without direct midday sun.
Why do hydrangeas need so much water?
Hydrangeas have high water requirements and should not dry out completely. The soil should remain evenly moist without waterlogging. More frequent watering may be necessary, especially on warm days or in bright locations.
How can you increase humidity for plants?
Humidity can be increased by carefully misting the leaves with low-lime water. A bright location in the bathroom can also be suitable for plants that prefer higher humidity.
