Modern isn't a type of flower, it's a design decision. Three principles come up again and again:
- Structure instead of volume. Individual stems are allowed to stay visible, differences in height are intentional. It makes the bouquet look lighter and larger than it actually is.
- Fewer varieties. Two or three types of flower in a convincing quantity beat eight varieties scattered in small clusters.
- Colours with an edge. Tone-on-tone gradients or a clear contrast – what matters is that the colour scheme is a decision, not a coincidence.

- Place the strongest blooms slightly off-centre.
- Leave gaps – they're part of the shape, not a mistake.
- Use greenery sparingly, more as a line than as filler.

Tone-on-tone in cream, rosé and beige feels calm and works in almost any room. Combinations of pink and orange or bordeaux and salmon are considerably louder – these bouquets set a deliberate accent and don't take kindly to a second floral display next to them. Green-and-white arrangements with calla, lisianthus or chrysanthemum sit somewhere in between: clean, graphic, understated.
Which palette fits depends less on the occasion than on the room. Light walls carry strong colours; plenty of wood and warm tones get along better with tone-on-tone.
